OUR STORY

WHAT IS HERFA HERITAGE?

Herfa is an English transliteration for the Arabic word meaning "craft", or "a talent produced with one's hands".

Herfa Heritage is an apparel and accessories social business concept that blends traditional, handmade Middle Eastern embroidery with modern style - comfy shirts, hoodies, hats, onesies, ties, leather belts, headbands, and more.

All pieces are hand-embroidered by local and refugee women in Jordan in their homes so that they can continue to care for their families and provide much needed income.

Items are produced in collaboration with the amazing Jordanian apparel brands Mlabbas or Jobedu and the incredible Bawabet Al-Sharq or Tribalogy women's cooperative workshops

Herfa Heritage seeks to empower and give back to the local community, while locally and internationally promoting the beautiful craftwork and culture of the Jordan and the Middle East. Additionally, we support teachers in schools through the Helping Syrian Refugees in Jordan organization.

Take care of your handmade Herfa wear. Machine wash gentle cycle inside-out or hand wash and lay flat to dry. Iron pockets if they wrinkle when in the wash.

The Citadel, one of the world's world's oldest continuously inhabited places, dates back to 1650 BC and has seen many civilizations come and go. It has seen the many changes over centuries as Amman grew from a small village to the city of 4.5 million people it is today. We love Amman!

OUR HERFA STORY

We left Boston and moved to the Middle East in 2014 for Tara's job with an NGO helping with the Syrian refugee crisis and local communities. Colin has been doing freelance journalism and communications and is a stay at home Dad for our one year old baby Alma. We love living in this region and learning first-hand about its history, artisans, unique culture, delicious food, and the peace issues and hopeful solutions.

We first lived in Beirut, Lebanon for a year and now we have been living in Amman, Jordan for over a year and a half. We have found handmade, traditional embroidery we love everywhere and have bought amazing embroidered pillows, coasters, bags, and decorations while living in Amman and Beirut. But we couldn't find any modern-styled embroidered clothes we would or could wear, so in 2016 we decided to find local partners and start making them!

The Middle East has lots of good stories to tell, and we hope to spread those positive stories to our friends, family, and customers back in the States and the West and locally in the region. Plus, we want to support important social causes and highlight the excellent craftsmanship here.

We believe that the best way to support underprivileged and refugee women in Jordan is to pay a fair wage for their crafts and build a strong company that will give them a lot of business. We also believe in financially supporting various NGOs and organizations that are doing amazing work to help locals and refugees in the region.

We launched (and were 2x funded) with a Kickstarter Campaign in April 2016 and currently sell in Jordan, the USA, and Internationally here on our website, Etsy, and in select stores. We also set up a stall at various bazaars in Jordan throughout the year, including Souk Jara, Nour Al Barakah market, and others.

AND BOOM - our social business HERFA HERITAGE was born! Thank you for your interest,

- Tara & Colin
